Workshops for Key Stage 1 & 2

Our interactive, hands-on sessions inspire children to actively explore the architecture and history of the Old Royal Naval College. All workshops at Key Stage 1 and 2 last between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours and are cross-curricular. Most programmes are free of charge.

Myths and Masks

Come and explore the myths of the Painted Hall in this lively storytelling session. Children will investigate the different gods, goddesses, monsters and heroes through role play and mask making. A drama extension activity is also available.

Pattern and Shape

1 hour 30 minutes - 2 hours

An interactive session that explores the maths behind the architecture and decorative work at the ORNC. Children will investigate shape and symmetry in the Painted Hall and Chapel and then create their own patterns. An engaging way to study maths outside the classroom.

NEW Meet John Deman

History, citizenship, English (En1 speaking and listening)

1 hour 30 minutes - 2 hours

Meet John Deman and hear about his journey from the West Indies to Britain with Nelson's Navy and his life as a Greenwich Hospital Pensioner. In this exciting living history experience children will find out about 19th century food, punishments and attitudes towards black sailors. This interactive session includes role play, trying on replica costumes and a visit to our real Victorian Skittle Alley.
This character was researched and developed in partnership with the National Maritime Museum.

NEW Take Another Look

Take another look. Despite their grand appearance, our buildings were not designed to house royalty – in fact, quite the opposite. Children will become architecture detectives, spotting and sketching inside and out, exploring the design and materials to piece together the history of the site.

Tudors at Greenwich Palace

Discover the site where Henry VIII was born and married two of his wives. Meet a Tudor lady-in-waiting and find out what life was like at Henry VIII's court at Greenwich Palace. This hands-on session involves learning a courtly dance, trying on replica armour and drama activities.

Tailor-made programmes

We can also develop workshops to suit the needs of individual classes. We offer storytelling and sketching tours, as well as sessions exploring the Chapel to link with the R.E. agreed syllabus.

Visits to the Thames foreshore
