A new attraction for summer 2008: East London's equivalent to the Eye!

Maritime Greenwich will have a new addition to its historic landscape this summer – the Greenwich Wheel. At 60 metres from the ground, taller than Nelson’s Column, visitors will take in panoramic views beyond St Paul's Cathedral and the Tower of London to the west, across the river and past Canary Wharf to the heights of Hampstead Heath, and east to the Olympic site in the Lea Valley. In the foreground, the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site will be laid out in a rare perspective.

Greenwich has a long history of wheels with The Great Wheel for the Earl’s Court Exhibition of 1895 having been built on the peninsular by Maudslay, Son and Field, who also manufactured the first public time ball – the bright red ball on top of Flamsteed House at the Royal Observatory.

The Wheel will be situated in front of the Pepy’s Building Visitor Centre and will be open to the public daily. Each pod holds 6 people and the ride lasts about 12 minutes, plenty of time to take some awe-inspiring panoramic pictures!

Tickets are priced at £7 for adults, £4.50 for children and £30 per pod. They are now available at www.greenwichwheel.com.

The Visitor Centre will remain open until 22.00 offering a selection of refreshments.
