Dominoes

Station House Opera’s commission for CREATE09 links the five ‘host’ boroughs of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, taking as its starting point the simplest of ideas… a line of dominoes.

On Sunday 26th July, thousands of concrete blocks will be used to create a moving sculpture along a 15-kilometre route, unfolding over the course of the day.

Beginning in Newham, the starting ceremony will see a structure of hundreds of blocks brought to life by a group of performers: changing, shifting and eventually setting in motion the slow toppling of blocks on their journey.

On streets, through parks and even on water, occasionally disappearing and then resurfacing, sometimes pausing for sculptural performances, the domino line will wind its way southwards, through Waltham Forest, Hackney and Tower Hamlets, linking the diverse communities of these boroughs in a symbolic as well as physical chain of cause and effect.

Eventually the line will cross the Thames, concluding at dusk in the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich.

Station House Opera is an internationally renowned performance company with a unique physical and visual style which has over the last 30 years created spectacular projects all over the world, from New York's Brooklyn Bridge Anchorage to Dresden's historic Frauenkirche and Salisbury Cathedral.

The 2009 Bank of America CREATE Art Award is a major new award for artists living and working in the five host boroughs of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games – Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest. As joint winners, Station House Opera were commissioned to produce an event that physically linked the five host boroughs of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Dominoes is being produced by Artsadmin, a unique organisation producing projects in contemporary theatre, dance, live art, visual arts and mixed media.
