The Altarpiece

Benjamin West's 'The preservation of St Peter after the shipwreck at Malta'

The magnificent Benjamin West altarpiece of The Preservation of St Paul after the Shipwreck at Malta is appropriate for a naval setting and is the only major work by West still in the position for which it was painted. In the painting the Apostle, who has been bitten but left unscathed by a viper, is shown casting the snake into the flames as his Roman guards, other survivors and islanders look on.

Join the congregation of the Old Royal Naval College Chapel for the regular Sunday service at 11am.
